Aloha All,
I know it has been a while since I checked in, but once you get out of the habit of blogging you keep thinking, I will chart a stitch tomorrow. Well it took a long time for tomorrow to come, but it finally has! Thanks for waiting for me😸
Holiday time is always busy and regular routines go awry, but I am trying to get my routine back to normal. My goal is to blog weekly, which means looking for stitches or designing new ones. Wish me luck everyone! Also, if you would like a certain stitch charted just send me an email and I will chart it!
I have a few items for you today, magnet, stitch, book review, and a fun canvas that a few friends are stitching.😸
I have been remiss in showing off my monthly magnet, so here is December’s Magnet. It is a beautiful Red Ornament. Magnet Mavens from Bedecked & Beadazzled supplies my monthly magnet habit. I love getting those lovely pink/purple envelopes😁

Todays stitch is the Alternating Continental Stripe Variation it comes straight from Ruth Schmuff’s newest book “ Stitches Volume Five “. I can’t believe there are already five books published by Ruth.
This stitch can be found on Page 10 of the new book. You may have seen this stitch before with a different name but this name describes the stitch perfectly and you do get a light stripe when stitching following the numbered stitch sequence.
I picked Alternating Continental Stripe Variation for the background of my Whimsy & Grace Cardinal canvas since it was a small versatile stitch. It is a beautiful canvas and my original thought had been to basketweave it. Of course I changed my mind and had Ruth of Bedecked & Beadazzled pull fun fibers for me.

The sample was stitched using one ply of Petite Silk Lamé color SP154. You can see a light striped effect.
I had thought of using 4-Way Continental Variation 4, but I could not get enough of the pattern in the small area of background. It just did not look very good. You need to get at least 3 full stitches of any decorative stitch for the stitch to work. You could extend the background, but I like the way the Cardinal fills the star as is.
There is not a large background area.
This is not an exciting stitch but it is practical and does show some texture. As my friend Jane Wood said “ It may not be the most exciting stitch ever, but it is certainly useful. It’ll work in a small space, for a background, for light texture…..it is the sort of stitch you can use when you can’t. think of anything else .” All of this is true, Alternating Continental Stripe Variation is a practical stitch, good to have in your arsenal of stitches. Have fun with it and I am sure you will find this stitch handy.

Stitches Volume Five by Ruth Schmuff!
This is the travel size which is 5.5 x 8.5. I love this size since it is not too big to make it heavy, but big enough to see a nice stitch diagram.

There are a lot of new stitches, too many for me to count. A stitch I designed a couple of years ago has been included on page 72, “Leaping Dolphins”. Leaping Dolphins makes a great sky stitch. I must say I was excited to see it in the book😻! Yes just a little vanity!! It doesn’t take much to make me happy, needlepoint in any form and books make me smile!
I tabbed areas in the book for specific uses, since I also found the perfect stitch for the cardinal, Diagonal Eyelet on page 215. There is also an interesting series of Floating Diamond stitches. I really could go on about the fun new stitches but will refrain and let you make up your own mind.
There are a total of 307 pages and the stitches are arranged in Categories in the Table of Contents. You will find said Category printed on the bottom of each page. At the back of the book there is an index of all the stitches. This book is only being sold at Bedecked & Beadazzled and is selling for $60 for the Travel size. I love this book and will use it for many projects. Ruth informed me that the book will become an app late spring/early summer. I was also given permission to photograph and show the inside of Stitches Volume Five .

Current members of my fun little club are me of course, Jane, Cheryl, Tess, & Ruth. Ruth enabled me to put this club together, therefore she is an honorary member, and is not required to stitch a crab. I am just having some fun with friends!

This picture was taken shortly after the donut incident! Yes, Tango took a golden opportunity when I left my donut on the table to go to the bathroom. I was away approximately 5 minutes and when I returned Tango had both front paws on my table, and was munching away at the side of my Iced Raspberry Jelly donut! Now he had eaten so much I had to cut ⅓ of the donut off so that I could finish it. He was a very naughty boy and has a sweet tooth just like me. He looks angelic sitting on Cheryl getting petted! But there is the hunter in him always looking for an opportunity to get any food, even lettuce!
I have to remember to put food into the microwave or toaster oven when leaving the room for any length of time! Tango also loves to chew on thread as Cheryl found out! She had a lovely wet piece of Soie d’Alger a la Tango, who was chewing the thread dangling in the back!
