Aloha All,
I hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather and stitching in your favorite summer spots. We have had a fairly rainy week so I have been putting a few extra stitches in on my last class project, Easy Breezy. No new classes to show, I believe my next mystery class starts in September, which is just around the corner. Until then I will be stitching on Easy Breezy and my little Owl from Love You More.
Today I am showing how my friend Jane, of Chilly Hollow Needlepoint Adventure, added a border to a small painted canvas, The border truly enhanced the painted design.
Stitch:
Today’s stitch is a Small Flower with Cross Stitch motif that repeats to make a canvas border. I did not sequence the diagram since there are different ways to stitch it. You can also find this as a background stitch in Ruth Schmuff’s Stitches Volume 3, Flower Background 4.
The canvas Jane added the border to is from Colors of Praise. It is LT 010, a Hawaiian lady 2×3 insert for luggage tags, or leather boxes.
Jane stitched this canvas beautifully, adding a floral border to emphasize the flowers in the dress and hair..
Diagrams:
- Stitch diagram with border delineated and without.
- The photograph highlights the first motif stitched for placement (circled).
- Jane left one canvas thread above the painted canvas. Also one canvas thread separates the motifs.
- The stitch diagram with the border highlights where the border is tent stitched.
The pink flower is stitched with 4 plies of Glissen Gloss Colorwash silk. Jane stitched the teal background with 3 plies of Splendor, and the cross stitch is a royal blue cotton floss. As I mentioned above there is one canvas thread separates the motifs. Jane chose colors that were used in the painted design for the border. The pink is used in the dress and the teal is one of the background threads.
Borders:
When adding a border to a canvas you can do so fairly easily. Choose a design or motif that complements the painted design. Motifs work well in borders and can be repeated as many times as necessary to adjust for size.
Some stitchers add a one row border when the canvas has a lot of open stitches. This provides a place to anchor threads.
Thanks Jane for allowing me to show off your beautifully stitched Colors of Praise Hawaiian Lady. It is an excellent demonstration on how to add a border to a painted canvas from a motif. This also shows how the painted canvas is enhanced by the border.
Friends Finishes:
Lucky for you I have a few canvases to show off that my friend Cheryl stitched over the last few months. Stitch and thread selections chosen by Cheryl.
Cheryl changed the colors of “Noel Golfs at the 19th Hole” to match her daughters cat Daisy. Canvas by Sharese, stitch choices by Cheryl.
The three Nativity canvases by Heidi were stitched during the drive to visit her daughter and family in Cincinnati area. I was impressed that Cheryl finished 3 canvases during the drive to and from Cincinnati.
Blue color changed by Cheryl. Originally Mindy’s canvas colors were green, black, & white.
I hope you enjoyed seeing the most recent finished canvases by Cheryl Roler Timko.
Happy Birthday Cheryl! Have a wonderful day (August 21) and I hope this is a great year for you!
Kitty Tales:
It has been a while since the Kitties told their story. Well Stimpy, my sweet girl wanted attention during my last embellishment class. It was past time for her to be fed so she decided to sit on top of my chair and groom me. Of course a few ladies in class saw and thought it rather funny. I can always count on Stimpy for a good grooming session when she does not get her way!
Good news, Blackie has been by to visit a few times, so I know he is being fed by the entire neighborhood!
Beardie loves to keep one eye partially open when Robo vacuum comes by!
Well folks, that’s all for today. I hope you enjoy the stitch diagrams. Don’t be afraid to add borders to your painted canvas, it can really enhance the design.
Will update you as I get different projects stitched. Please send photos of stitches you have used from blog for the Featured image showcase.
Have a great weekend and stitch when you can!
