Aloha All,
Last week I promised I would give you a tour of another Needlework store in Honolulu, Fiddlesticks Too ! This is a wonderful store owned by Joan Remold, Pam Lau, & Adele Barres, the needlework ohana (family)! When on vacation in Hawaii you have to stop by and say hello!
Before I show you the store I want to give you today’s stitch, the Hawaiian Quilt Pattern. I wanted the dress on Pegge Hopper’s, Walk Across the Sea 1 to look like a quilt pattern.

While in Hawaii I saw several Hawaiian quilt patterns that I would love to translate into stitch patterns. This is my take on a simple quilt pattern. The first step in designing this pattern was to trace a motif onto graph paper. With a motif graphed out I found stitches to create the pattern. A couple of stitches were auditioned before I settled on the pattern you see below. I love this design and hope you will too!
Hawaiian Quilt Motif – Step 1
Hawaiian Quilt Pattern – Step 2
Stitched example of the open Hawaiian Quilt Pattern.
This portion of the sample is stitched with Petite Silk Lamé. In the next stitched sample you will see that I added the beads using the Petite Silk Lamé.
Hawaiian Quilt Pattern – Step 3
Stitched sample of Hawaiian Quilt Pattern, no contrast.
In this sample I stitched the graphed red stitches using one strand of Burmilana. I found that there was not enough contrast in thread color to allow the quilt motif to show, you need a darker or lighter color. If you are looking for texture this combination of colors will work beautifully.

I changed the Burmilana to a dark brown in this sample, which makes the quilt pattern pop! The secondary pattern is circular which works well when you want a rounded appearance. If you want the beads to show more you could change the color of the thread used to attach them, change the color of bead, or change the size from a 14/0 to an 11/0. Depending on your color combination you could use this stitch in a variety of ways, as always, have fun with the stitch 🙂
Now for the tour of Fiddlesticks Too !

On the “tiger” front, I met a Hawaiian cat while zip lining at Kualoa Ranch. Felix is very well taken care of by the staff at the ranch, and loves to be petted by anyone!
