Aloha All

I have charted the start of the first band of my sampler. When I started designing the first band I pictured snow. It had been very cold here in Cleveland, there had just had a big snow storm, and my mind was thinking of snowflakes. The Nordic Snowflake Eyelet in the sampler came from a picture that I saw. Since there really are no new stitches, just combinations of different ones, I am sure somebody has charted this before. This is my interpretation of a shape from a photo and I hope you enjoy it.

The band is not complete but I am slowly working on finishing it. I am adding beads and smaller stitches to bring the band together as a whole. Since I had imagined that I would be able to give you the chart sooner I am posting what I have done. You can now work along with me if you choose. I am not going to give out time frames of when I will have charts complete since I am having difficulty stitching and charting for any length of time. My right arm is very painful, but is improving slowly but surely Now you know why I have not been able to blog quite as frequently.

You may wonder why a band sampler, well this was the first type of needlework that I did years ago. I was also involved in a year long Friendship Sampler through our ANG chapter in Hawaii which involved stitching twelve bands on twelve different samplers . Many people may also remember that in 1994 ANG’s magazine published one band per month for a year. From reading the magazine I know that it was very well received. I thought this would be a great way to stitch some stitches that I have not been able to use on painted canvas, and some of my favorite stitches, these tend to be of the woven variety.

Band Samplers are a very old needlework technique and date back to the 1500’s where the first surviving sampler was stitched by Jane Bostocke in 1598. Samplers were a way of recording stitches, teaching, and were used as a practical method in a young girls education until printed books were readily available. At this time samplers became more decorative rather than functional. Today they are still a means of exploring different stitches. Like the samplers of old, I am going to include different styles of stitching to make it more fun. I like drawn work so I may include that, we will see how this evolves.

The zoo has been having fun with the snow. Angus decided he wanted to become a snowman and would not come in the house, he laid outside for some time.

Now I did here that Punxsutawney Phil, our groundhog, is predicting another six weeks of winter, so hunker down and keep on stitching!
